paper experimentations!

So I was FINALLY able to take pictures of my paper experiments!  Most of these I didn't end up using in my final lamp structure, but I guess thats why it's called experimenting right?

this is the one that I'm using for my final.

I loved the puncturing idea!

I would have experimented more with this one.

this is my preliminary structure for my final lantern.  (sorry the picture is facing the wrong way!)

Mainly I tried to contrast the fluidness of the swirl pattern and the rigidness of the squares.  I also like the surprise element when you turn the light on! :) I'm really excited to see what my final lamp will look like.    I'm actually looking forward to working on it some more! This has been a really fun project so far.

paper lanterns...

Well, it seems that my creativity juices are running low...I'm not coming up with any very creative ideas for our lantern skins!  It's coming along though.  It is a very interesting project, and one that you could go many ways on.  It's really interesting to be using light as a design element...I don't think I've really done that before.
I'll try and put some pictures up tomorrow!

project 5 on it's way already!

We turned in project four today!! PHEW! Such a relief to get that done with.  It was a really fun project but a lot of work.
I hope this final project for the semester will be fun too! I'm a little confused with our first assignment so far (folding and cutting paper) but we will see what I can come up with.  It'll be a nice easy assignment and a break from all that book-making stuff!
I can't believe the semester is already coming to an end! It's gone by soooo fast.

reflection on the readings

Photo-ops reading
I enjoyed this reading.  I've never been a big photography person, and this helped me to see what photographers look for when they are taking pictures and how to make sure it will be a successful photo.  For example, the author talks in one section about "framing" the picture using the environment to focus the eye to the subject.  I had never thought of doing that when I'm taking a picture before...and I'm sure it's a very effective way of creating a successful picture.  After reading this, I feel like I could even be a good photographer in my free time if I wanted to.  For this specific project, I think that using any of these components would be helpful in communicating the meaning of the word.  One of the concepts that the author talks about is "exploration."  I think that using exploration in this project is very important, for when you explore multiple ways of setting up your letters, you get many different ways of looking at your word and you are able to choose the ones that are the most effective in depicting the definition.

Steve Edwards Photography
This reading was very educational.  The history of photography was based a lot on the social movements during the past century or so.  I thought it was really interesting that photography was not considered an art form until pretty recently and that it was really only thought to be used for documentation.  They related this back to the time of the Renaissance and how artists were considered to be lower class and only painting only for documentation purposes, which the artists argued against; they believed that they were doing it as a much higher art form with important subject matter and that a high level of intellectual thinking was needed to do the work that they were doing.  The same thing happened with the invention of the camera: it was originally created to allow easier documentation, but artists found a way to make it into one of the most popular art forms of today.  I never would have thought that photography could be something to argue over.  I guess once again it represents the clash between the more liberal thinkers and the artists.  I think that photography is just a more modern way of painting...we can use the same concepts and themes that artists use in painting, we just have a different tool to do it.  Like the last reading talked about, photography uses symmetry, grouping, framing, trial and error, etc. These same themes are used in all art forms.
I would say that the photos we are taking for our project are very much from an artistic standpoint.  We are not using them to document the fact that our letters were there; we are taking pictures to show others how we are communicating our word in the most effective way possible.  Looking at them, we can see how the word is being depicted and how it helps to define the meaning.

Parts of the Letter
This reading on the parts of the letter pertained a lot to this project.  The serifs and other parts of the letter help communicate different meanings (it can make it more simple, more complicated, more squished (confined), more expanded, taller, fatter).  For example, our word was extend, so we used the broadest font we could to create the sense of it extending out as far as it could go.  We also did them all in caps so that it increased the extension both height-wise and length-wise.  The reason we did not use a serif was so that it was more simplified and focused on the breadth of the letters rather than the artistic component of them.

taking pictures of our word :)

It was exciting to see our word finally out on campus!  It definitely put it in a whole new aspect.  As soon as I get pictures from Caitlyn, I will put some up.

So on blackboard it said to blog about taking pictures of our word from different angles and how that affects the meaning of the word.
Taking pictures down low on the ground, for example, would make the letters seem bigger and more ominous, as if they were towering over you.  If you were trying to convey the meaning of your word as big and dominant, you would take pictures from down low.
Taking pictures from up above, as a bird's eye view, could make the word look smaller if it was taken from very high up.  It could also capture the environment in a more effective way if you wanted the environment to play a part in conveying the meaning of your word.
Where you place the letters also plays a big part in telling the meaning of the word.  Setting them farther apart from each other would give the sense that they are expanded and use more space.  Pushing them together as much as you can gives the sense that they are more constricted if you wanted to put that idea in the meaning of your word.
For our word, (extend) taking it from a side angle or such might help give it a better sense of expansion and stretching out.  It could also make it look longer, as if we were "extending" the word as much as possible.

color refinements!

So here are my refinements! :) I really the second one from the left on the very bottom.  I think that adding the pink really helped make it more interesting...and I think it helps guide your eye with the bouncing of the ball better too.  Even though the refinements I  made on them were small, I really think that they helped a lot. I'm really pleased!
:)

exteeeend.

Well, the word construction is coming along great! :) Our words look awesome and they are HUMONGOUS!!! I think that they will be really effective when we photograph them.  Our group is working really well too...we are all putting in hard work to get this project done and do it well.

And I will get my color refinements up soon! I've been busy and haven't gotten a chance to work on them yet but I promise they will be up soon!!

group work!

Yay for groups! Our word is EXTEND.  An interesting word that could be very effective if we use it right around campus.
main definitions:

to be or become extended; stretch out in length, duration, orin various or all directions.

to reach, as to a particular point.

to increase in length, area, scope, etc.

We are thinking about using our letters to extend off the edge of something, or extend upwards.  We thought it might be cool to use an area where they are doing construction, but we don't know of any construction around campus right now. So we are thinking of doing something with the walkway in Corbin, or the glass walkway that connects the art and design building.  Another option we have is using the campanile, because it is the tallest point on campus.

yay final 6!

I think I've picked and refined my final 6 word drawings in Illustrator! I'm pretty happy with them, and after the group critique and talking with Margie it was easy to pick which ones were the best and what to do to make them even more effective.  Next we are working with our groups...and I'm really excited to see what we are going to come up with for our pictures on campus. It'll be so fun to work with words and the environment!
So, here are my final 6! including original 3)

more color exercises!

so i'm gonna re-do that first sketchy thing (the picture i have on my last post) because it's not quite as effective as i was hoping....
anyways, here's some of my other ones i've been workin on!

i really like that second to last one.  that was one where i was supposed to key the color and i think it worked out really well. the last one though i don't think worked out so well...so i'll see what i can do to fix it.

color exercises

the three colors i chose for the color exercises are cyan, magenta, and yellow-orange.  I really think they work well together, and they're pretty opposite.  it took me forever to make a design that showed depth! i finally figured it out though, and this is what it looks like :

I haven't added color yet, but that's the next thing on the list!

dribbbbbbble

YAY we finally turned in our posters! I am pretty happy with my results and I'm ready to get going with this next project.

We did a little critique of our twenty word "sketches".  It was good to know which ones effectively communicated our word and then little things to fix on the ones that weren't as effective.  I've already done the pathfinder exercise...that was interesting because I could do different things in Illustrator than if I were to just cut and paste letters.  It's going to be hard to choose out of all of them which ones to work on for the final product!  So far, I think this is my favorite project this far.  Maybe it's because I want to go into graphic design which involves typography...

cut and paste!

Today we cut and pasted a looooot of letters :P it was a ton of fun I think.  I really enjoyed seeing how creative others got with their words and even how creative I got.  After awhile though, I seemed to run out of ideas! Maybe all I need is a break...so when I start doing them again hopefully I'll be able to come up with some newer ideas.
Here are some of the better examples of what I did today!

woo hoo!

I'm so glad this project is finally starting to wrap up! Just a few more tweaks and we shall be done!  I have learned a lot throughout this project, mostly about processing the "process".  The final product will be so satisfying to look at and think about all of the hard work that was put into it.  Working with Illustrator and some Photoshop was a learning experience too...like I said, I had a lot of previous experience with it, but I have learned twice as much just with this project.
I can't wait to turn it in!!!!!!

final 16

This project is starting to wrap up pretty well! I'm actually pretty happy with most of my drawings/sketches in illustrator.  A little tweaking and they'll be good to go!
So for my color, I think I'm going to choose a bold blue.  Blue is a calm color, and I think that it represents peace, stability, and order.  My clip assimilates with all of these things...it helps to organize things and lessen chaos, creating a more peaceful environment.  I'm choosing a bold blue because even though it's calm and organized, it's also fun and can make a statement.

working with illustrator

I'm really excited about everything I'm learning about illustrator through this project.  there are SO many possibilities that you can achieve by using it and so many tools that I never knew about that are now essential to me when I'm using illustrator.
I'm also glad that we have an opportunity to use color in this project.  The concept of color and color symbolism as well as the usage of multiple colors together is really interesting to me.  I like learning and figuring out what colors go well together and how to use those colors to really communicate concepts and ideas.
I can't wait to see my finished project!!!!!!!

yesterday!

so yesterday was really interesting...we put up all of our best sketches on the wall and everyone went around and critiqued them.  It was nice to see what others thought of mine and others' sketches.  It is kinda nice because now I know which of mine are the most effective and which of them in need to work on.  I'm excited that we got to the refining part of the sketches because now we can start using them to convey our ideas on the objects on a different level.  It will be cool to see everyone's projects when we are done to see what their take is on their object. :)

thursday!

Alrighty...
well today we imported our images/sketches into illustrator and started making them in there.  I've had a lot of experience with illustrator/photoshop in high school, so I'm pretty excited to be using it again! I'm also learning lots of other tricks and tools in them that I didn't know were there before, so that's really cool.

I also liked working on the sketches where we assimilate a word to our object.  It's another chance to be really creative and work on my problem solving skills!
I've attached some pictures of some scans of my sketches!

Tuesday

So we continue to sketch!
I'm finding it a little hard to make sketches for the texture...I'm not quite sure how to express it, because my object is mostly smooth and it's hard to come up with different ways in which to show it's texture.  But I suppose that's where the problem solving comes in!
I really like drawing the "indexes".  It's finally a chance to use your imagination and see what you can relate to your object!
Alright well hopefully I'll get some pictures of sketches on here soon!

Faculty gallery

I really liked Margie's pieces in the Art and Design faculty gallery.  I also read the magazine article next to them that went with the paintings.  It's really cool how the pieces are so simple, yet they convey a lot of meaning about society and culture.  The contrast between the more antique items and/or pictures and the more modern objects was also intriguing because they made a statement about each other.  I also liked how the objects were arranged on the page...it was so simple, yet you could tell that a lot of thought was put into where each object was placed.
How these pieces relate to what we are learning in class:
The drawings we are doing in class are supposed to be very simple, yet convey a lot of info about our object at the same time.  Margie's works are the same way. They only have a few items in the paintings, yet  they hold a lot of meaning.  Our main idea in this project is also to create symbols and representations of our hand tools, just like Margie's paintings are symbols of society and culture.
:)

Today

Today in class we worked on the next four types of drawing our objects.  I really like the one where we use any non-traditional materials because there aren't really many restrictions and you are free to use your imagination.  I also liked looking around at other students' art and seeing how they perceive their objects and what their style is like.  I feel I am learning a lot in this project about interpreting ideas and doing so effectively.

website!!!

I ran across this website! They are zipper headphones...and our group actually came up with this idea in the last project.  I think it's cool someone else had the idea too!!!

Understanding Comics Reading/Tuesday class

This reading really helped me understand the difference between icons and symbols, and even the differences between each of those individually.  It really opened my eyes to the world of cartoons, and how much thought actually goes into comics, even if they are just for entertainment.
I liked also how it mentioned that icons are universal.  It's cool that an artist (even me!) could make something that can be understood by anybody, no matter what their language and background.

I'm really excited for this project!! I'm liking what we're doing so far, with the fast sketches and drawings.  With more practice, I really hope to be a pro at it by the time we turn this one in.

Here is my original object:
And here are some of the "painterly" drawings I did in class today.

Why I chose Graphic Design

I have always been into art since I was little, and I always knew that I wanted an art-involved job.  My interest in graphic design began in middle school actually, when my mom mentioned that I would be good at it.  So I kinda kept it in the back of my mind and when high school came around, I became involved in a lot of art classes and a few design classes.  All of my teachers noticed my gift for it, and they encouraged me to continue my art/design education.  One of my counselors mentioned that KU had one of the best design programs out there, so we decided to check it out...and I just loved the campus and everything about KU.  Ever since our first visit, I knew that I was going to end up coming here.

I also knew that all companies are in need of graphic designers, so with a degree in graphic design, it figured that it should be fairly easy to find a job, as long as the economy hasn't gone completely down the hole by the time I graduate.  I thought about other majors that you can get in art, and some of them you can't really get a job in (such as painting, sculpting, etc.) so graphic design was my best bet, and I could really enjoy it.

With a career in graphic design, I really hope to create art and designs that are different and not just cookie-cutter.  I want to create art that will make others stop and think, and maybe even inspire them.  I want it to make them feel good.  I'm not quite sure as to exactly what I want to design (billboards, logos, advertisements, packaging, etc.) No matter what my job ends up to be, I want to encourage others and make them happy...maybe even turn their days around.
